First plant of the month is Carex testacea in 2L pots. As you can they are a good grade in this pot size and have good colouring you'd expect from this species.

Our main push this month is for hedging varieties. It's a great time of year to plant this time of year as your new plants have an opportunity to establish themselves before the cooler months. Plants that are established before spring have the opportunity to put on a good amount of spring growth which will make a lot of different especially in a hedge line.

The species we are looking at are as follows:

  • Corokia 'Bronze' - Has light to dark bronzey leaves and yellow star-shaped follows in summer. Grows to about 2 x 1.2m
  • Corokia 'Bronze King' - Has light to dark bronzey leaves and yellow star-shaped follows in summer. Grows to about 2 x 1.2m. The leaves are smaller then 'Frosted Chocolate' and 'Bronze'
  • Corokia 'Red Wonder' - This variety displays well and has bright red berries. 1.5 x 1m
  • Griselinia littoralis variegata - Quite an appealing shrub with its deep green oval shaped leaves with yellow margins. Grows to about 3-10m and is quite dense making it a good candidate for shelter.
  • Olearia paniculata - Shrub or small tree to about 2-4m that has light green leaves with wavy margins. It also has fragrant flowers in summer.
  • Olearia traversii - This Olearia has dark green leathery leaves and can grow to about 4m. Flowers in summer and is hardy in very dry conditions.
  • Prunus lusitanica -Portugese Laurel - Very hardy large shrub to 6m. Glossy foliage. Suitable for hedging and low shelter. 
  • Teucrium fruticans - Shrubby Germander - Hardy shrub to 2m. Good bee fodder. Grey foliage and blue flowers - good for clipping. Ready in spring. 
  • Viburnum tinus - Laurustinus - Hardy shrub to 3m. Tolerates wide range of conditions. Masses of white flowers. Good low shelter and for clipping into a neat hedge.
