It’s pure luck to be in this country but it’s even luckier to be able to have a piece of it in your own backyard. With a bit of planning your space can fit in a bit of a wild mountain forest, lush rolling hillside, resilient coastal scrub or even a bit of healthy farm land.
That’s the magic of our natives, you can have a piece of real New Zealand in a few square metres.
Acaena anserinifolia
A small groundcover with soft grey-blue leaves. Small flowers grow above the foliage between December & February
Aciphylla aurea
Also known as Golden Spaniard or Golden Spear grass this tough alpine plant has solid leaves that are a yellowish green colour. It is best suited to free draining soil which will possibly yield a more yellowish tinge from the plant.
Aciphylla horrida
Growing up to 1m this spear grass has long narrow leaves that are sharp and pointy. The yellow flower stems grow to 1.5m in summer.
Aciphylla scott-thomsonii
The tallest Aciphylla with old plant flowers growing to 3m high with bluish green leaves and tall yellow flowering stems. This makes a very bold statement in the garden or in the wild.
Anemanthele lessoniana
A very soft grass that is green to gold/bronze in colour. The plant takes on a very pleasant red tinge as the seed becomes ready. This is definitely a favourite in the garden and found in drier open bush areas around the country. 1 x 1m
Arthropodium cirratum
This garden lily is a very adaptable and appealing plant that grows to about 1m high with very beautiful starry flowers. This has proven to be quite appealing in large numbers.
Astelia chathamica
This Chatham Island native has broad flax-like leaves that have a silver metallic appearance. A very stunning plant to look at and can grow upwards of 2 metres tall, favours rich soil but will grow in drier conditions.
Astelia fragrans
Common throughout New Zealand this Astelia variety also has a silvery metallic look but the ribs are often reddish. Good for an empty spot in the garden or landscape and will prosper in both sun and shade.
Astelia nervosa
An Astelia with varying leaf size and colour; reddish tones through green to silver are possible. The height also varies from 80cm to 2m.
Carex 'Frosted Curls'
Very pale green foliage but the curls at the tips are more of a blonde colour. Like all Carex it is hardy to most conditions and very popular in the garden and in the wild.
Carex buchananii
With stiff leaves leading to a soft curled end and a reddish-brown colour this Carex species is a great garden plant and will enjoy sun and a bit of moisture. Like all Carex species it is also found in several areas around the country and is a great candidate for re-vegetation.
Carex comans 'Bronze'
Very strong brown/bronze colour. It is very attractive in the garden or landscape and also very tolerant to a wide range of conditions, another popular choice.
Carex comans 'Green'
One of the most popular garden varieties of Carex in New Zealand, the comans ‘green’ has weeping leaves that start off green but lighten towards the top of the plant. Great for landscaping and re-vegetation as it is found throughout New Zealand.
Carex dipsacea
With its narrow leaves and light green appearance Carex dipsacea is yet another very pleasant grass for the garden. It can be found throughout New Zealand and will grow in most conditions.
Carex flagellifera
Vary in colour from shiny green to a pale bronze. It has a slightly arching leaf and grows to upwards of 50 to 60 cm in height. Found throughout New Zealand and like all Carex’ it will enjoy most conditions.
Carex secta
Weeping yellowish green leaves, grows to about 1 metre in height and is a prime candidate for re-vegetation in swamps or very moist conditions. It is found throughout the country in swamplands and beside water where it thrives but will grow in most conditions.
Carex solandri
This Carex has yellowish green leaves that droop slightly to give a beautiful form. It grows to about 60cm in height and will handle most conditions.
Carex testacea
Definitely a big favourite in the garden with its green to orange arching leaves. It grows to round about 60cms in height and enjoys a wide range of conditions however full sun will aid the best foliage colouring.
Carpodetus serratus
Smooth greyish white bark. Juvenile leaves have smaller, rounded serrated leaves while the adults leaves are oval in shape with a less serrated edge and also have a dark green with lighter green marble effect. Tiny white flower appear during summer. 5m
Chionochloa flavicans
Miniature Toi Toi (grows to about 1 metre.). Very distinctive and beautiful plant in flower and enjoys most conditions
Chionochloa rubra
Very popular for both the garden and re-vegetation as it grows to about 1.5 metres tall and has very fine weeping reddish coloured leaves. This will grow in nearly every type of condition.
Coprosma 'Beatsons Gold'
This shrub grows to about 1.5m in height and has appealing yellow-green variegated leaves. It like most Coprosma’s is quite hardy.
Coprosma 'Lobster'
Small divaricating bush with reddisg-bronze foliage. Tolerates a wide range of sites and grows to about 1-2m
Coprosma 'Midnight'
Reddish bark with dark narrow foliage to make for a good contrast plant. Grows into a tangled bush. .5 x 1m
Coprosma 'Red Rocks'
Narrow dark reddish brown leaves and mats close to the ground, can tolerate cold and windy conditions. 40cm x 1m
Coprosma 'Red Spires'
Cooler months produce very attractive red foliage for this native. It will grow to about 1m tall.

This Coprosma has narrow olive-green leaves and mats close to the ground, can tolerate cold and windy conditions. .5 x 1.5m
Coprosma kirkii
This is a ground cover that grows to about 30-50cm in height and about 1.5m across. The leaf is small and narrow and is a glossy olive green colour. It will grow in nearly any conditions.Cop
Coprosma lucida
This native shrub has beautiful glossy green leaves which are a nice contrast to the orange-red berries it produces. Native 3-4m
Coprosma parviflora
A common shrub in the wild this Coprosma branches often to give a tangled effect. Flowers are very small and the fruit can vary in colour from transparent white to yellowish-white, red or dark purple. 3 x 1m
Coprosma propinqua
Growing to around 1 to 2 metres this Coprosma spreads widely and has small rectangular leaves with berries that are blue and slightly transparent.
Coprosma robusta
A rapid growing plant that’s grows to about 2-4m. The oblong leaves are dark green, leathery and glossy in appearance. This plant tolerates a wide range of conditions.
Coprosma rugosa
An erect Coprosma with reddish bark and small narrow leaves. Grows up to 3m tall and berries are ripe around April and May
Cordyline australia purpurea
Similar in most respects to your normal cabbage tree however will not grow quite as tall and has purplish/bronze foliage. 5m
Cordyline australis
Cabbage Tree, this native palm tree grows upwards of 5-10m with long narrow mid-green leaves (30-100 x 3-6 cm.) Well known for its use in landscaping and revegetation due to its ability to grow in a wide range of conditions.
Cordyline indivisa
Mountain cabbage tree and has much wider leaves then Cordyline australis. It grows to about 8m and demands deep rich soil, semi shade and damp conditions.
Corokia 'Bronze King'
Has light to dark bronzey leaves and yellow star-shaped follows in summer. Grows to about 2 x 1.2m.
Corokia 'Frosted Chocolate'
Has light to dark chocolate brown leaves and grows to about 2 x 1.2m.
Corokia 'Red Wonder'
This variety displays well and has bright red berries. 1.5 x 1m
Corokia 'Yellow Wonder'
This variety displays well and has bright yellow berries. 1.5 x 1m
Corokia cotoneaster
This shrub has a tangled growth form and will develop into a dense bush of about 1-3m. Its leaves are small dark green or bronze and will tolerate harsh dry conditions.
Cortaderia fulvida
This is the smallest of the Cortaderia and may reach about 3m. Fast grower in moist conditions and is suitable for low shelter
Cortaderia richardii
Also known as the South Island toetoe (however will grow in most conditions New Zealand wide) and is found alongside water, scrub and sand dunes. Grows to about 1.5 metres in height and reaches 3 metres with its cream plumed flower heads.

Kahikatea or White Pine is another well known New Zealand tree. Growing from 25-55m this tree is our tallest NZ native
Dacrydium cupressinum
Rimu is a well known kiwi icon with beautiful timber qualities. A tree can grow up to 30m (with taller trees on rare occasions) however this will takes a very long time.
Dianella nigra
Resembles a small fine leaved flax plant and grows to about 60cm. Delivers flowers in late spring to summer followed by berries. It is not fussy about growing conditions.
Dodonaea viscosa
Also known as AkeAke the Dodonaea is a small evergreen tree that grows quickly and reaches about 3-7m with long narrow green leaves. It tolerates most conditions.

Purple leaved form of Ake Ake and more hardy. 3 x 1m
Festuca coxii
A native to Chatham Island that grows to about 30cm and has beautiful fine blue leave. Enjoys the sun but will handle most conditions
Festuca novae-zelandiae
A beautiful fine grass with green foliage at a young age however the older foliage tends to be greyish brown to blonde in colour. This Festuca grows to about 50-70cm in height and will tolerate very dry and poor conditions.

Deep green oval shaped leaves with a splash of white in the centre. Grows to about 3-10m and is quite dense making it a good candidate for shelter.

Grows to be a round 1m shrub with glossy green leaves. Blue/Purple flowers are present for long periods of summer and winter.
Hebe 'Edinensis'
A low growing shrub that could grow to about 30cm high. Resembles Hebe ‘Emerald Green’ however the branches have a slight whipcord appearance

Another hardy Hebe that grows low to the ground at about 20x50cm. White flowers appear in autumn to winter.
Hebe champagne
A good ground cover plant that grows about 50cm tall and 90cm wide. It has dark green leaves that are flushed with purple and in summer it has violet to white flowers.
Hebe colensoi
A low growing and spreading Hebe with blue leaves about 3cm long and 1 cm wide. Flowers from late winter into late spring.
Hebe cupressioides
This whipcord Hebe grows compactly to about 1m. It will also produce small pale blue flowers.
Hebe cupressoides nana
This is the dwarf version of Hebe cupressoides. It will grow to round about 30-60cm.
Hebe decumbens
A very attractive Hebe with small green leaves with red edges accompanied by a very dark stem. It has white flowers in spring to summer and grows to about 45cm x 90cm.
Hebe diosmifolia
This Hebe grows to about 50cm and has narrow glossy dark green leaves. When it flowers in early spring the plant is smothered with white and lavender flowers.
Hebe elliptica
At 1-2m this Hebe forms quite a large bush with small dark green leaves. The flowers are slightly larger than the normal Hebe flowers and are produced in white and lavender colours from late spring to autumn.

Double flowers with a dark maroon centre, grows to about 2 metres.

Double flowers that are crimson to cherry red from late summer to mid winter. It has bronze foliage and grows to about 2m compactly.

This plant is known as Porcupine Bush which is taken after the plants appearance. Young growth has sharp tips at the end of the branches and while not the most attractive plant it could be an interesting option for the garden.

Myoporum laetum
Also known as Ngaio this tree forms an attractive rounded tree up to 6m tall. Its leaves are green lance-shaped and are dotted with oil glands. In summer it has small white flowers with purple markings.
Myrsine australis
This 3m tree has narrow green wavy edged leaves that are speckled with red. The young branches and margins are also red.
Myrsine divaricata
Also known as ‘Weeping Matipo’ this 3m shrub has many stiff interlacing branches in which small round leaves are borne.
Nothofagus fusca
Also known as Red Beech this 20-30m tree sheds its old leaves (which take on a red colour) in late spring. The timber is also durable and of a reddish colour.
Nothofagus menziesii
Silver Beech has tiny oval leaves with serrated edges that are a glossy dark green. It has similar characteristics to Red Beech however the trunk is a silvery grey and the timber is paler.
Nothofagus solandri
Black Beech tends to reach about 9-12 metres in the garden and up to 24m in the wild. As with all Beech this is another New Zealand icon.
Nothofagus solandri cliffortioides
This beech has small shiny oval green leaves and grows quickly. Has quite attractive foliage and is known as Mountain Beech.

Hard Beech. This beech has lush green serrated leaves and grows upwards of 30m tall
Olearia avicenniifolia
Large shrub with pointed leaves and fragrant flower heads. Hardy. 3 x 5m
Olearia ilicifolia
Mountain Holly grows to about 2m tall and has white daisy like flowers in spring. The leaves are long, light green and look similar to holly.
Olearia lineata 'Dartonii'
Erect small tree with narrow leaves. Fast growing and hardy. 3.5m x 3.5m
Olearia paniculata
Shrub or small tree to about 2-4m that has light green leaves with wavy margins. It also has fragrant flowers in summer.
Olearia traversii
This Olearia has dark green leathery leaves and can grow to about 4m. Flowers in summer and is hardy in very dry and salty conditions.
Phormium cookianum
Also called ‘Mountain Flax’ (although it is found from sea level to 1370 metres) this species is perfect for revegetation and also a fine addition to any garden. This flax also grows to about 1.5metres in height without the flowers which will bring the plant up to 2metres.
Phormium tenax
New Zealand Flax’ can grow taller to 3metres and the flowering stalks can grow between 1.5 to 4metres.
Phormium tenax purpureum
Same characteristics to Phormium tenax however it is a dark red/purple in colour.
Pimelea prostrata glauca
This native is a low-growing shrub that spreads to roughly 1m and has tiny bluish leaves with white flowers from spring to autumn. This is a very good ground cover plant.
Pittosporum 'Gold Star'
Gold and green leaves with a creamy coloured midrib and grows to about 1.5m
Pittosporum 'Green Thumb'
A hardy tree that can grow to about 8-10m and has a wavy green leaf.
Pittosporum 'James Stirling'
Small pale green to silvery leaves with black branches and grows to about 3m.
Pittosporum 'Limelight'
A very beautiful Pitto cultivar with striking colouring in the leaf. The margin has a nice cream colour while there is a two-toned variegation of lime-green and green. 2 x 1.5m
Pittosporum 'Marjorie Channon'
With its rich green leaves with creamy margins this Pittosporum grows to about 3-5m and is a nice round compact shrub.

This tree has compact growth with small green leaves and grows to about 2.5-4m

A large shrub with dark green leaves that have a white rib. Grows to about 2.5m and it very hardy.
Pittosporum crassifolium
This is a bushy tree that grows to about 3-6m and has light young leaves that darken with age. The fragrant flowers are tiny, red and occur in spring and early summer.
Pittosporum eugenioides
Lemonwood. A very popular tree that has a glossy pale green leaf that when crushed releases a lemon scent. It can grow to 5-12m in the wild but usually peaks at 6m in cultivation.
Pittosporum ralphii
Long and thin leaves for a Pitto. It grows to about 2-5m and has dark red flowers from spring to summer.
Pittosporum tenuifolium
Kohuhu has shiny light green leaves and wavy margins. It grows to about 4-6m and has honey-scented dark red flowers in spring
Pittosporum tenuifolium purpureum
Leaves are a dark purple although at a young age the foliage is green and slowly turns to purple as it matures. 5 x 4m
Pittosporum tenuifolium variegatum
Creamy variegated edges on a greyish green leaf.

This native shrub stands about 1.2 to 1.8m tall. Its stems are quite reddish and are tough and slender

Also known as ‘Silver Tussock’ this grass droops gracefully and is a finer fawn-grey in colour. Growing to about 50cm to 1m in height and suits a drier site in the garden or in the wild.

Hall’s Totara. Large growing indigenous tree. Attractive form though slow growing.
Podocarpus totara
Totara. Large forest tree to about 25m. Important historically for various timber uses due to it’s rot resistance.
Prumnopitys ferruginea
Miro. Fine, tall, round headed tree. Slow growing and prefers shaded position. 25m
Prumnopitys taxifolia
Also known as Matai or Black Pine this tree grows to about 25m and is known for its durable timber qualities. The timber colour can vary in light and dark brown tones.
Pseudopanax arboreus
This small rounded tree grows to about 3-6m and has glossy, thick, serrated 5 fingered leaves. The flowers appear in winter and are followed by small purplish berries that attract birds.
Pseudopanax crassifolius
Lancewood has a unique juvenile form; the 2cm x 60cm (approx.) serrated leaves aim towards the ground from a single stem and this lasts about 10 to 20 years. As it matures you are left with a 5-12m tree with a bare trunk and a rounded top.
Pseudopanax ferox
Toothed Lancewood. A popular landscaping plant known for it’s unique toothed foliage. In its juvenile form the leaves come off 1 stem and point downwards. Adult trees lose these juvenile leaves to be left with a bare trunk and rounded tree top. 3-6m
Pseudowintera colorata
Commonly a shrub or small tree up to 10m high has reddish coloured leaves with a pungent taste. Also known as Horopito or Pepper tree.
Sophora 'Dragons Gold'
This Kowhai grows to about 1.5m and has characteristics of a low spreading shrub. It flowers in winter well before other Kowhai.
Sophora microphylla
Also known as NZ South Island Kowhai this tree grows to about 3-7m and has fern like foliage. It is covered with bright yellow flowers in spring.
Sophora prostrata
Similar to other kowhai varieties however the leaves and flowers (which are yellow to orange) are smaller. The tree also only grows to about 1-3m.
