Poplars & Willows

That time of year again, we have had huge demand and from the initial stocktake several of the most popular lines are close to sold out. But don’t be afraid to query anyway as we never know real numbers till the sawdust pit is full!

End of an era!

Now we didn’t plan all this together but May will be the last month good ole Mr Ian Davies will be working with us. He has decided to retire and spent more time looking after his lifestyle/forest block and travelling to see both family and numerous wonders of the world!

He would be looking at 50 years in the industry soon and that’s got to be an indicator of good dedication and green fingers. A large chunk of his working life was spent as 2IC at Herbert forest and that’s a good source for some interesting stories. Then he started working with Ford’s in the early eighties and has been with involved with that nursery (both Ford’s & Oregon) ever since barring a couple volunteer stints in Tanzania (again another source for a different point of view on the world.)

Personally I have found him to be a very interesting man who you should listen too if you have the chance. It is rare to leave a conversation without learning something (usually useful and important.) He is also a very funny man who will be greatly missed.

We wish him all the best as he is one of a kind, a dying breed of forest rangers & nurseryman extraordinaire.

End of a half decade

It’s bittersweet to say I will be finished as of April the 29th! I started back in 2004 and really enjoyed working outside, propagation, and my brain soaked up as much plant knowledge as it could.

Recently an opportunity has come up for my partner to move to fulltime work after graduating so I will start taking my web design work a bit more seriously (www.roardesign.co.nz). This also means I will also be playing ‘stay at home dad’ for 3 days a week, life is about to become very interesting!

It has been good dealing with you all green fingered people. The amount of laidback people with a good sense of humour is really one of the assets to working in this industry and has probably been the main thing that has kept me from moving on earlier.

with youngest son Liam

It’s been good dealing with you all!
Cheers,
Craig

New Year and a New Website!

Goodbye 2010 and Hello 2011!

All in all 2010 was a good year. While there were some quiet patches we were run off our feet the whole time and playing catchup is the name of our game at the moment!

Open ground stock are in the ground and are coming along nicely, we just need a good winter without the swimming pools around the place so we have lift them hassle free (wishful thinking on our part but you have to be positive!)

The leylands are getting a big push at the moment so we’ll have plenty to go around and we have a nice selection of trees and shrubs planned for next season.

Anyhow I have a couple orders to get out the door but from all us of here we hope you had a great Christmas/New Year period and good luck for 2011!
